As anglers we don’t always agree on what is best for the club and it’s future. A few days ago I had a heated debate with another club member on the subject of stocking the carp lake. So I wish to get some feed back from our membership. The two camp are as follows 1 chuck some small carp in the lake to increase the fish stock. 2 remove the smallest of the fish in the lake (small Roach/Rudd) and let the bigger fish (Carp) grow on. As a small club we can’t afford to go out and purchase large carp.
The first camp say we want more fish to catch and this will only be achieved buy obtaining new fish stock. Place the stock in the lake and then we will be happy (well that is until next time the fishing gets hard). This is a policy used by commercial fisheries around the country. Never mind the fish stock all that matters is catching fish. Commercial fisheries can afford this system they will often also send somebody round the lake first thing in the morning to take out all the dead fish. As commercial fisheries the quantity of the catch out weighs the quality. This system has a proven record over the last few years. Yes it will increase the catch in the short term but with dire consequence’s for the future. The only way this works is to over stock each and every year.
The second camp wish to cull the small fish and remove the better sized fish to the match lake. This system is recommended by the top fish experts in the country. The system is simple the more natural food and cover the fish have the more comfortable they are. Reducing fish stock will give each fish space. Increasing water plants will increase cover and in the long term natural food. Introducing willow fences below the water line for fry to hide behind will stop them form being eaten by bigger fish. These will also need to stop Herons from eating them. The willow will brake down over years and will increase the algae in the water. This in turn is eaten by invertebrates and they are eaten by the fish. This in turn will promote growth in the fish stock. Please read the following page from a web site http://www.fisheriesmanagement.co.uk/Cropping_and_destocking.htm
I don’t know the person who wrote the site but I know it’s content follows that of the course Ken and I attended a few years ago at Sparshoult Collage. The lecturers on the course are often quoted in fishing magazines on all subjects to do with fishing. The knowledge they have is far deeper than that of most anglers.
If we look after the lake and its stock it will look after us in the long term. Over stocking fish will only lead to fish stress, disease and death. Correct fish management will lead to content happy fish the stress will be reduced and improve the fishing. Some fish have only to be caught three times in there life time to be given a heart attack from the stress caused. Surely we owe it to the fish to give them the best life we can as a thank you for the pleasure they bring us.
Please let me know what you as club members think on the subject.
It is with great sadness that a past member has died
Neil Hall passed away whilst fishing
He will be missed by all anglers
My thoughts go out to his family
Ken and i and our wives have just got back from 2 weeks on the Kennet and Avon canal. So as soon as i learn how to use this blog and then show Ken we can use it to keep our club member up to date with events at the club.
