do we need more carp ?

Written on 9 December 2011 at 9:10 pm, by big kev

we had this message the other day from SM
Match lake desperately needs carp. It’s fine if you want to catch roach all day but that’s boring after a couple hours. And if the so called carpers didn’t fire boilies left right and centre you might catch fish instead of spooking them. In summary match lake definitely needs decent sized fish in it.
this is my reply
I could not disagree more you are advocating an old fashioned way of fish management. This has been proven not to work although it seems the best way it is in fact more detrimental to the fish stock. Carp are bullies and will hog as much food as they can in order to grow and breed. They will chase off the smaller fish who in turn will suffer from starvation. What is needed is true fish management. first cull the small fry (they are the ones who grab the bait and reduce the chance of a good sized fish getting on your) line. second place tree branches in the lake to give cover and to slowly rot away (this will increase the natural food in the lake and the fish stock will increase in size with the extra space and food available). This is the basis of good fish management but it comes at a price after all the smaller head of fish in a lake the less bites people will get. By creating cover for the fish they will be more likely to bite but they are also more likely to head for that cover and snap the line. in far to many lakes it is standard policy to overstock the fish after all an angler who is catching is a happy angler. That is all well and good if you are not bothered about the quality of life for the fish and the angler concerned can’t be bothered to develop the skills required to catch the fish. I know of lakes where first thing in the morning a person has a job to walk around the lake and remove the dead fish before the anglers turn up. Then they just add a few hundred fish every few weeks. This is senseless unless you are ether very rich or making lots of money from the anglers who fish on those locations. Even then it is not a good policy and it will eventually get angling a bad name and increase the pressure to ban it. A ban on angling is something I would not like to see.
Thank you sm for contacting the site and giving us this feed back and i will pass your comments on to the chairman after all it will be his and the committees decision weather or not to put carp in to the lake.
Please if you fish at the club we would love to have your comments on this or other subjects.

This is a post i just had in

That question from me was worded all wrong. I'd like to know if there were any carp in the match lake next to the car park. I know there are crucians
in there i've had a few. The bottom lake is great for carp to a good size
(paste seems to work well). Would anybody else like to see 20 or so small carp 1-4lb in the top lake? It would make things exciting and
could also act as a feeder pool to the main carp lake.
I have heard of an extremely reputable company who offer fish at very competitive prices www.riverfield.co.uk
Either way i think you run an extremely well maintained fishery and compared to a lot of lakes i have fished,
your stocks seem to be in extremely good condition and all for a fantastic price at £5 a day ticket. Regards.

my answer
some time ago a proposal was made to put in 50 small carp to add variety to the fish in the top lake. At the time i had
already started to see the damage carp do to fisheries but i relented in my argument as i predicted all 50 carp or at least
90% of the fish would die within the first year. i was laughed at by several other members of the committee at the time
and told i do not know what i was talking about, within 6 months all the fish were dead as i had predicted. since then a
few small carp were added to the lake again and as far as i know one or may be two are still swimming around in the lake.
All waters will hold a limited head of fish depending on the size of the water, depth of the water and the available natural food.
increasing the head of fish will only lead to the death of the stock that are already in the lake. only when the lake reaches a
balance will the death of the old and new stock finish.
so by adding new fish you will not increase the head of fish just kill off the weakest of the new and old stock.
by adding any fish you also increase the chances of bringing in infection or parasites.

Update
I had a chat with Ken on the subject he has confirmed what i already thought the the Match lake has a small head of carp and the
committee have no intention of adding to that head in the near future. with that in mind may be looking at other methods in order to catch them.

this is from Barry
One of the main things that attracted me to TMS is the ability to fine down tackle and fish delicately especially in the winter without
getting beat by carp all the time.
The club currently caters for both carp anglers and general coarse anglers very well. In fact we have one of the few waters in Cornwall

that contain true crucians with little chance of the strain being hybridised by king carp. In angling in general the carp

angler is very well catered for. Whilst appreciating that the majority of anglers want carp, carp and more carp I

think it would be a sad day if TMS were to stock more into the match pool.
If this was done how long before there were complaints of being broken in the lillies with cries for them to be removed.
No please keep the divide and give the traditional angler somewhere to get away from the boilie brigade.
 Barry
I am on the membership waiting list, the main reasons for wanting to join is that your waters are about as close as it comes to natural.
One of the few remaining waters in Cornwall which still present a challenge. As a purely pleasure angler who doesn't have to catch huge
fish to have a good day out i ask please don't change anything without thinking long and hard about the consequences.

Rod licence

Written on 8 May 2011 at 8:37 pm, by big kev

http://www.fishingmagic.com/index.php?news=15202
I just spotted this on Fishing magic. It’s a site I have belonged to for years but not visited in the last few months. This I a warning about the online sites you might have thought about getting your rod licence from. At the end of the day it’s up to you but why pay extra for you licence. I must admit I did not realise you could even get them on line from anybody but the EA.
